MCSB Emerging Young Artist Award, 2014

The MCSB had planned to present a music scholarship award in the amount of $500, for a young, talented musicians located in the Jackson Metro area. However, our applicants in the 2013 cycle were so strong that the judges recommended, and the board approved, the award of THREE scholarships.

 

The winners of our 2013 award were:

 

1st Place - $500 - Ellen Moore, Flute - Northwest Rankin HS. Ellen plans to use this award towards her trip with the Lions band. This is Ellen's second year in the Lions Band.

 

2nd Place - $300 - Aubrey Lynch, Flute - Murrah HS. Aubrey plans to use this award towards summer camp and private lessons.

 

3rd Place - $200 - Claire Coxwell, Bass Clarinet - Brandon HS. Claire plans to use this award towards her trip with the Lions Band. This is Claire's fourth year in the Lions Band.

 

Application deadline and audition dates for the 2014 award is yet to be determined.

 


The purpose of this award is to seek out and encourage future musical leaders who demonstrate exemplary skills and sensitivity to the art of music.


The goal is to help finance private music lessons, music workshop, summer music camp, or be applied toward the study of music at the secondary level. The amount of the award will be $500.

Auditions will be held by appointment on a date to be determined, probably in April 2014, beginning at 10 a.m., at the Ridgeland High School Band Hall, Sunnybrook Road, Ridgeland MS. Click here to see a map to RHS.


Students will be scored in the following areas:

 

TECHNIQUE:

Tone: characteristic to instrument, beauty, in ranges   

Major Scales: knowledge of key signatures, octaves per instrument, speed

Chromatic Scale: range, speed

Prepared Etude: correctness of rhythms and tempos; play the MUSIC, not just the notes. To download your etude, click the appropriate link below:

Flute/Piccolo          Oboe (lower C instruments)

Clarinets, Saxes, Trumpets, Horns, Baritone T.C.

Trombone, Baritone B.C., Bassoon, String Bass

Tuba

Percussion (includes drums and mallet/keyboard percussion)

At this time, we do not offer this award to vocalists, or to players of strings, piano, organ, harp, or other non-band instruments.

PREPARED SOLO:  (Does not have to be self-taught)   

3 minute minimum, 5 minute maximum.

Grade level medium to advanced; a piece written for the instrument.

Variety of style-i.e. melodic section, technical section, cadenza.

SIGHT READING:

32-64 measure piece at medium to advanced level; to be supplied by the committee

1 minute prep time

ESSAY:

Expression of content

Goal for/Need of scholarship

 

Notification of the winners will be no later than May 2014, and the awards will be presented at the MCSB Spring Concert, May 17.
